Outdoor retail parks and shopping centres have grown in recent years as more retailers move away from the often-hectic high streets to open-air shopping precincts.
However, there has been a need to revitalise these areas in order to create a welcoming environment that attracts more visitors, inviting them to shop and stay for longer.
Yorkshire shopping outlet, Junction 32, which has over 80 brands, eateries, events, and community initiatives taking place within their outlet, has revamped their outside space, investing heavily in facilities that benefit everyone who visits – with Northeast metalworks team, Morfabrication on hand to help along the way.
The Project
The project to help revamp the shopping centre focused on providing modern, stylish outdoor seating areas, which were non-intrusive, up-market, and most importantly, not off the shelf.
Junction 32 wanted something different, something durable, and something that would last.
Providing Morfabrication with the initial concept and after numerous discussions and planning exercises, our team designed and produced CAD designs that simultaneously met Junction 32’s requirements and offered that element of uniqueness.
Morfabrication manufactured and installed Corten curved gabion raised beds which incorporated curved bench seats and planters with the metal framing hot zinc dipped, galvanised, and then powder coated to prevent rusting.
The seating areas were then finished with African Iroko hardwood which is renowned for its long-lasting qualities.
Corten steel was chosen due to its ability to withstand all weather elements, as it weathers in a way that it brings out the unique brown and orange colours that Corten is known for.

Practical and modern, we used all locally sourced products and recycled steel to manufacture the gabions and seats, ensuring that we also supported Junction 32’s sustainability initiative”.
“We opted for Corten steel for this project as it is maintenance free, it is environmentally friendly, there is less chance of vandalism, and it is corrosion resistant. Revitalising tired and empty spaces, these mild steel seating areas certainly make Junction 32 stand out.”
