Structural Steel Fabrication Across the North East & UK — EXC 2 Certified

MorFabrication is a BS EN 1090-1 / 1090-2 Factory Production Control (FPC) certified structural steel fabricator based in Washington, Tyne and Wear — supplying CE / UKCA-marked structural steel up to Execution Class 2 (EXC 2) to main contractors, architects, structural engineers and developers across Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Tees Valley and the rest of the UK.

We fabricate beams, columns, portal frames, trusses, mezzanine floors, staircases, balustrades, balcony frames, retail and hospitality structural metalwork, and custom steel components in grades from S275 through S355 and up to S690, working to BS EN 1090-2, BS EN ISO 3834-2:2021 welding quality, and ISO 9001:2015 quality management.

We are a UKAS-accredited supplier (cert via SCCS, Notified Body 2273) and our integrated workshop also runs in-house powder coating, stainless steel fabrication, and finishing — saving programme time on multi-package projects where structural steel needs galvanising, painting or coating before installation.

What we fabricate

Beams & columns

UB, UC, UKB, UKC, PFC, RHS and SHS sections in S275 / S355 / S460 / S690. Cut, drilled, coped and welded to drawing, supplied loose for site erection or pre-fitted with end plates, cleats, fin plates and base plates. Hot-dip galvanised or coated as specification demands.

Portal frames

Industrial and warehouse portal frames — rafters, columns, haunches, bracing, eaves beams, purlins and rails. Fabrication packages from single-bay extensions to full multi-bay structures.

Trusses

Roof trusses, lattice trusses, space frames and bespoke truss assemblies for industrial, commercial and architectural use. Steel grade and section optimised against load and span calculations.

Staircases & balustrades

Commercial, industrial and architectural stairs — straight, dogleg, helical, spiral. Combined with steel or glass balustrades and handrails. Powder-coated, galvanised, blackened or polished finishes.

Mezzanines & platforms

Mezzanine floors, plant platforms, access walkways, gantries and crash decks. Built to support point loads, UDL, mobile loads and dynamic loads per design.

Retail & hospitality structural steel

Structural metalwork for shop fit-outs, hospitality venues, restaurants and stadium hospitality (see the Hill Dickinson Stadium / Everton Stadium case study).

Balcony & canopy frames

Residential balcony steelwork, commercial entrance canopies, signage frames and architectural support steel.

Bracing, cleats & bespoke components

Wind bracing, vertical bracing, fin plates, gussets, cleats, base plates — manufactured to BS EN 1090-2 with full materials traceability.

Fabrication capabilities

Structural steel from the North East, supplied UK-wide. Workshop between Newcastle, Sunderland and Durham (Washington, Tyne and Wear). Direct local delivery across Tyne & Wear, Northumberland, County Durham and Tees Valley; pallet courier and dedicated transport anywhere in the UK — Yorkshire, Manchester, Birmingham, Scotland, London and beyond.

Industries we serve

Commercial construction — office buildings, retail units, warehouses, distribution centres. Steel-frame and steel-plus-concrete composite designs.

Residential — structural beams for extensions and loft conversions, balcony frames, mezzanines in apartments, structural steel for new-build housing.

Industrial — factory frames, plant platforms, machinery support frames, heavy-duty mezzanines, gantries, structural cladding support.

Hospitality and retail fit-out — structural metalwork on fit-outs where bespoke design and finish quality matter as much as load calculations. (Recently delivered for Hill Dickinson Stadium West Stand hospitality.)

Education and public-sector — structural steelwork for schools, leisure centres, health facilities — documented to PQQ standards.

Stadium and venue projects — architectural and structural metalwork on stadia and arenas (see the Everton Stadium case study).

Why main contractors choose MorFabrication

Process

  1. Drawings and brief — send your structural engineer's GA, member schedule and any detail drawings. We can also work from architect drawings if you'd like us to suggest a steel frame solution alongside your engineer.
  2. Quote — itemised tonnage, sections, fabrication time, finish, delivery. Typically within 48-72 hours on standard packages.
  3. Approval drawings (where required) — we issue fabrication drawings for sign-off before cutting steel.
  4. Material order — from approved UK and EU mills with mill certificates.
  5. Fabricate — cut, drill, weld, blast prep as needed.
  6. QA + inspection — visual to BS EN ISO 5817; dimensional check; weld inspection. NDT (MPI, dye-pen, UT) on request.
  7. Finish — galvanise, prime, paint or powder coat per spec.
  8. Deliver — flat-bed or articulated lorry depending on size; pallet courier for smaller items. Erection can be arranged with our trusted install partners on the North East.

Frequently asked questions

What Execution Class can you fabricate to?

We are formally certified up to Execution Class 2 (EXC 2) under BS EN 1090-2 — the class required for the vast majority of UK commercial, residential and industrial structural steelwork. For projects requiring EXC 3 or EXC 4 (large bridges, stadia primary structure, critical infrastructure), please discuss at quote stage.

Do you UKCA / CE mark structural steel?

Yes. Our BS EN 1090-1 FPC certificate (number 2273-CPR-4181) covers UKCA and CE marking of load-bearing and welded structural steel components up to EXC 2. We issue a Declaration of Performance with delivered steelwork.

What steel grades do you work with?

S275, S355, S460 and S690 across UB, UC, PFC, RHS, SHS, CHS and plate. Material is sourced from approved UK and EU mills with full mill certificates.

Can you do design as well as fabrication?

We fabricate to drawings produced and approved by your structural engineer. We can supply fabrication detail drawings for sign-off and can recommend trusted structural engineers if you don't have one. We do not stamp or certify structural calculations ourselves.

Do you do hot-dip galvanising and painting?

We coordinate hot-dip galvanising through a partner galvaniser and run priming, painting and powder coating in-house. Duplex (galvanise + powder coat) packages are a regular request — commonly used for outdoor architectural steelwork.

What's the maximum beam length you can fabricate?

Our workshop handles standard structural beam lengths up to typical commercial requirements. For very long sections (12m+), we coordinate splice details that work with site lifting plans. Discuss specific lengths at quote stage.

Can you supply small batches and one-offs?

Yes. One-off beams, single mezzanines, individual stairs, residential extensions — all welcome. No minimum order on fabrication.

Where do you deliver?

Direct delivery across the North East — Newcastle, Sunderland, Durham, Tees Valley, Northumberland — on our own transport. UK-wide on dedicated transport, articulated lorry or pallet courier as appropriate to load.
