Powder coating at MorFabrication

Powder coating in any RAL colour — Newcastle & North East

MorFabrication is a steel fabrication and powder coating specialist based in Washington, Tyne and Wear. Our in-house coating line applies AkzoNobel Interpon and Axalta Alesta powders in any of the 213 RAL Classic colours, in matt, satin or gloss finish. We handle single prototypes through to full architectural runs on gates, railings, fencing, stairs, balustrades, conveyors and bespoke metalwork.

If your specification lists a specific product code — Interpon D1036, D2525 or D3020, Alesta AP or SD — we’ll match it exactly. If you need a colour outside RAL Classic (BS 4800, BS 381C, NCS, Pantone or a bespoke sample), we can source or match that too. Get in touch or use the Get a quote button on any colour below.

Quality & Standards

Powder coating standards we work to

MorFabrication operates an ISO 9001 quality management system. Our powder coating line is set up to meet the test regimes and performance requirements called out in the following British, European and industry standards — the ones you’re most likely to see referenced in an architect’s specification.

BS EN 12206-1

Architectural powder coating on aluminium

The core European standard for powder coating on aluminium extrusions, sheet and castings intended for external architectural use — curtain walling, windows, doors, cladding.

BS EN 13438

Powder coating on hot-dip galvanised steel

The standard for duplex systems — hot-dip galvanised or sherardized steel with a powder topcoat. Covers external steel fencing, balustrades, railings, lighting columns and street furniture.

Qualicoat

Architectural powder coating certification

The European industry certification scheme for architectural powder coating. Qualicoat Class 1, 2 and 3 correspond to general, super-durable and ultra-durable performance — roughly equivalent to AAMA 2603 / 2604 / 2605.

We also work to the test methods from BS EN ISO 12944 (corrosion protection of steel), BS EN ISO 2813 (gloss measurement — the basis for matt, satin and gloss), BS EN ISO 2409 (adhesion), BS EN ISO 9227 (salt spray) and BS EN ISO 4628 (coating degradation). FAQs

Powder coating colour questions — RAL, Interpon & Alesta

RAL (Reichsausschuss für Lieferbedingungen) is a European colour matching standard. RAL Classic contains 213 colours, each with a four-digit code, so the same powder coating colour can be specified and reproduced consistently regardless of supplier. For powder coating it means a customer can ask for “RAL 9005 satin” and get the same result from any competent coater. MorFabrication coats in any RAL Classic shade at our Washington facility.

On UK jobs we coat, the RAL colours we see most often are: RAL 9005 Jet Black, RAL 9010 Pure White, RAL 9016 Traffic White, RAL 7016 Anthracite Grey, RAL 7035 Light Grey, RAL 7021 Black Grey, RAL 9006 White Aluminium, RAL 5010 Gentian Blue, RAL 3020 Traffic Red and RAL 6005 Moss Green. These are usually held as stock items in both Interpon and Alesta super-durable ranges, so lead times are shorter and the unit cost is lower.

Finish describes how much light the coating reflects. Matt (10–30 gloss units measured at 60°) is low-sheen and flat-looking. Satin (around 30–70 GU) has a soft low sheen and tends to hide minor surface imperfections. Gloss (70+ GU) is bright and reflective. The same RAL colour can be specified in any of the three finishes. The 3D viewer on this page shows a representative approximation of each on the colour you pick.

Yes. We apply both AkzoNobel Interpon and Axalta Alesta powders at our Washington facility. The architectural sub-ranges — Interpon D1036, D2525 and D3020; Alesta AP, SD and AP-HD — map to the AAMA 2603 / 2604 / 2605 durability classes and are specified most often for external work. We also apply economy polyester and epoxy powders for internal parts. If your spec calls out a specific product code we’ll match it exactly.

No. Screen colours vary with monitor calibration, lighting conditions and browser settings, and powder on metal looks different again to ink on paper. Use this tool to narrow down a choice — then ask us for a physical RAL fan deck or a small test panel before committing to a larger run. We keep samples on site and can post or hand-deliver across the North East.

Yes. We handle RAL Design System+, BS 4800, BS 381C, NCS, Pantone and bespoke matches regularly. Custom matches usually involve a one-off batch of powder and a minimum order quantity. Send us your target (a RAL code, a BS reference, a physical sample, or a Pantone number) and we’ll come back with cost and lead time.

Pick a colour from the chart, choose a finish, and click Get a quote. Your colour code, name and finish are pre-filled in an email to us — add your item dimensions, quantity and any finish notes, and we’ll reply with a price and lead time, usually within one working day. Gloss levels explained

RAL codes define colour, not sheen. We supply most colours in matt (10–30 GU), satin (30–70 GU) — the most common architectural choice — or gloss (70+ GU), measured at 60° per BS EN ISO 2813. See our powder coating standards guide for how to write gloss into a specification.

We also match RAL Design, BS 4800, BS 381C, NCS and Pantone references as made-to-order powders. Request a quote with your reference and we’ll confirm availability and minimums.
